Nearly 1,000 Years of History on the Silk Road
Fu tea first appears in Jingyang County, Shaanxi Province. During transportation of Hunan dark tea leaves through the region, local craftsmen discovered the unique "Golden Flower" fungus (Eurotium cristatum) growing naturally on the tea, creating the distinctive flavor that would define Fu tea for centuries.
The first formal Fu brick tea is produced, marking the birth of Jingyang Fu Tea as a distinct product. It quickly becomes the official tea of the Silk Road and a key commodity in the ancient tea-horse trade between China and Central Asia.
Jingyang becomes the largest Fu tea processing and distribution hub in China, with over 86 tea houses operating simultaneously. The town thrives on tea processing, packaging, and trade, becoming an essential node in the transcontinental tea trade network.
Due to various factors, Fu tea production is relocated to Hunan Province. Traditional Jingyang Fu tea production nearly ceases, but the craft and knowledge are preserved by local artisans.
Recognizing the cultural and commercial value of traditional Fu tea, Jingyang County initiates the revival of traditional Fu tea making techniques. Local government and tea enthusiasts work together to restore the lost craft.
